Practices for the Pandemic: 14 Days of Healing

Day 5: Soothing Self Massage

Today’s practice for the pandemic is abhyanga, an Ayurvedic self-massage using warm oil that is a deeply calming, soothing remedy for healing the nervous system. Abhyanga is all about self-love, self-compassion and body awareness. This richly soothing rub works efficiently to deliver calm and balance when you’re revved up or out of whack. It helps regulate your elimination, blood circulation, and most especially, your nervous system. The warm heavy quality of the oil calms frazzled nerve endings just under your skin. Then, the hot bath or shower helps the oil penetrate deeply into your skin, leaving you refreshed, lubricated and resoundingly present. It’s an elemental chill-out practice to benefit everyone of all ages – kids love it! PS: How’s it going? Do you have a favorite practice so far? One you’re sure to reach for in the future? We’d love to hear your feedback about #practicesforthepandemic. Please write Swami Jaya Devi at swamijayadevi@kashiatlanta.org to share your experiences of these practices.
