Thai Massage

Thai massage is a form of sacred bodywork used to help the participant find the connection between exterior, or physical issues, and interior issues of the mind and heart, creating a holistic experience of mind-body-spirit. This form of bodywork originated 2,500 years ago and blends yoga, ayurvedic principles, energy work and acupressure. This practice is sometimes referred to as “lazy man’s yoga”, because the therapist expertly guides your body through various poses and massages energy points called sen lines, encouraging the client to let go of doing and relax into being. You receive this form of bodywork wearing loose, comfortable clothing. With this technique there is no use of oils or lotion. The incorporation of essential oils (optional), pillows and massage tools might be used.

Techniques involve:

  • Compression massage
  • Stretching myofascial tissue
  • Manipulation of acupressure points
  • Percussive massage – called tapotement
  • Variations of assisted yoga poses, modified as needed to make them more gentle or deeper expressions
  • Yogic breath work and meditation

You will be asked to fill out an intake form prior to your first session, which is provided by practitioner, so that the session can be pre-planned according to your needs. Thai massage works in a similar way to regular yoga poses. Participants will be asked if there are particular poses they enjoy and which they are hesitant about trying. Poses include supported twisting and inverted Thai yoga positions, such as plough, shoulder stand and spinal twists and supported back bends. These poses can be modified just like in a yoga class to be more gentle or more challenging.

Other benefits of thai massage are:

  • Increased lymphatic drainage – the releasing of toxins that sometimes get trapped in the body
  • Increased circulation
  • Improved digestion
  • Release of emotional or mental stress – which occurs through the manipulation of muscles while using conscious deep yogic breathing
  • Rebalancing of the nervous system
  • Increased energy
  • Increased range of movement
